When large quantities of people are killed with magic, or a powerful spell is cast in an area, it may damage the magical fabric of the area and create a rupture. A rupture will cause magic to malfunction or fail completely in the area, and random magic affects can occur within it. Common ones are scrying of remote areas (which may appear as ghostly people who don’t seem to respond to you), changes in temperature (as the heat energy is converted into fuel for the random effects, and items being knocked around or floating with random levitations. This is where most stories of hauntings and ghosts come from. Most ruptures will heal over time, but as of yet, no one has figured out how to repair them faster. The more powerful the effect, the longer it takes to heal. Some have yet to heal even several hundred years after their cause.
